One look at a map will tell you that looking for a flight to Australia is not enough - you will need to be a bit more specific about your destination, because we are talking here about a country that takes up an entire continent (and it is a big continent). So here are a few of the airports in Australia that you can choose from, depending on where in the country you are planning on traveling.

The largest and busiest airport in Australia is Sydney (Kingsford Smith) International Airport (airport code SYD), which makes sense because it is the main airport for the largest city in Australia, the capital of New South Wales - Sydney. This is the main international gateway for travelers coming to and from Australia, and Sydney Airport is a major hub for Qantas Airlines. A complete list of all the airlines which serve Sydney is here, and you can track incoming and outgoing flights here. Maps of the terminals are available online to help you get your bearings.

Melbourne is Australia's second-largest city, so it is easy to understand that Melbourne Airport (airport code MEL) is Australia's second-largest airport. How large is Melbourne's airport? Well, it is big enough to warrant its own zip code, which is pretty big. The airport is also large enough to have been the first airport in Australia to be ready for the massive new Airbus A380. It is a hub for Qantas, a focus city for Virgin Blue, and the home airport for the new low cost airline Tiger Airways Australia. All the airlines serving Melbourne are listed here, and you can track flights here. The services available at Melbourne Airport are listed here.

Up north, the main airport is Brisbane Airport (airport code BNE), which lies about 13km from the capital of Queensland. Chances are good that you will arrive in Australia from overseas via Sydney's airport, but if your destination is the Gold Coast then you might want to hop a short flight up to Brisbane immediately. Australia's main budget airline, Virgin Blue, serves the Brisbane Airport, and a list of all the airlines serving the city is here.

If your destination is Australia's western coast, then you will need to head to the Perth Airport (airport code PER) after your arrival in the country. This airport serves the capital of the massive state of West Australia, and sits about 15km from the city itself. Despite its small size, the Perth Airport is an important gateway from many points in Asia and Africa. All the airlines serving Perth can be found listed here.
